Deadhead preferences

The deadhead catalog is an Excel file that enables the Optibus system to know the travel time and distances between all the terminal stops of the trips.

When the system creates deadheads (trips without passengers) during optimization, it takes the distance and duration from the deadhead catalog.

Once you've uploaded the catalog, you can set deadhead catalog preferences in the schedule.

To access deadhead-related preferences, open the Preferences menu and search for the name of one of the preferences described below.

Deadhead Generator

If the deadhead catalog is missing some trips, you can use the Deadhead Generator preference to fill in deadheads missing from the catalog.

Click Load Template, and use the Deadhead generator - default template.

Note: the deadhead generator should only be used as a temporary solution until you fully define your deadhead catalog.

Deadhead Limitation

The Deadhead Limitation preference enables you to restrict the usage of deadheads to a required minimum. The preference sets distance limitations for deadheads and depot pull-in/out trips.

In this preference, you can use a template to specify whether you want to limit deadheads in all circumstances (a “hard rule”) or enact a “soft rule” in which you express your preference to limit deadheads and define a penalty for violation of the preference.

For example, the Minimize Vehicle Cruise Restriction template lets you set a maximum distance for deadheads originating from the depot.

Deadhead Filter

To filter the results of the deadhead generator, or sometimes even the deadhead trips from the catalog, you can use the filter option, which overrides or changes deadheads and pull-in/out events under certain conditions.

Select the Deadhead Filter preference and click Load Template, then load the Max speed per vehicle type template to define the maximum speed of a deadhead, which affects trip time.
