Relief Points best practices

A relief point is the place where you can allow drivers to get on or off of the vehicle (i.e. cut vehicles into duty work pieces). In this article, you can find some best practices for using relief points.

  1. The best practice is to define the relief points per route or route group. If you have a few routes/route groups you would then add a few instances of relief points per route/route groups. In the example below, every row is an instance of a relief point:

  2. The relief point preference does not allow contradicting route definitions. For example if you want to define relief points X and Y for Route 1 then you should not define it in two separate instances like:

    1. Route 1’s relief point is only X

    2. Route 1’s relief point is only Y

This would result in an empty group because X and Y contradict each other. The valid relief point instance should include both stops and should therefore be: Route 1’s relief point is only X and Y.

For example, if route 7’s relief points are Swanbourne Road and Glover Road:

Therefore, make sure you do not have two instances with the same route (route 7) defined.

  3. As explained above, if there are no relief point instances set up, all terminal stops and mid-route reliefs are valid relief points. However, when you have set up even one instance of relief, anything that is not explicitly defined as a relief point is not allowed, not even the depots.

Therefore, if you have specific routes that do not have a terminal or mid-route relief and they are only allowed in the depot then you need to define a safety net or an instance that gathers all of those routes.

For example, in the schedule below, the route 13 has Hillsborough Intc as the relief point but it hasn’t been defined in the preferences as the relief point. You can also see in the validation panel that an error is flagging that there is an Illegal piece from 04:30 to 08:26: Relief point - route 13 (relief point preference) as shown below:

So to add that in the safety net relief point, search for the route 13 to apply the stop Hillsborough Intc as the relief point as shown below:

Once you click Apply after making the change, the relief point will be added to route 13.
